Jerry Zgoda of the Minnesota Start Tribune, has reported that Don Nelson is interested in the Minnesota head coaching vacancy. http://www.startribune.com/sports/wolves/125673128.html
Quick Analysis: I’m just going to go ahead and proclaim this to be a done deal for one simple reason: David Kahn is an idiot. For one, David Kahn most likely has no idea what kind of coach he wants, and who it is he’s going to go after. His young track record with coaches is already in shambles. He gave Rambis only two years to figure out how to win with one of the most horribly put together rosters in the league, and without Kahn’s BFF, Ricky Rubio. So yes, one of the winningest coaches of all time picking up the phone and basically asking for the job is probably the best thing that has happened in Kahn’s life outside of the birth of his children, and Ricky Rubio.
Secondly, we know that Khan as a flare for the absurd, and a tendency to do what will get his name in the news, and not what is best for the team. A Don Nelson hire–which is flashy indeed–will certainly quench that thirst. For a GM like David Khan, this hire is a no-brainer. He doesn’t have to think about it very hard, and it gets him in the news.
As far as how this will turn out, just look back to the career of Don Nelson. He’s like Mike D’Antoni times ten. And while we all know how such a style can produce rowdy, high school gym-like excitement, and stunning upsets–an 8 seed laying the smack down on a 1–we all know what the long term result is: no championship. Nelson is a stop gap, someone who can come in with his fun bag and make sure fans show up and the team doesn’t absolutely suck. He is by no means someone who can come in and establish something long term, and something that will end in an NBA Championship for the T-Wolves.
The T-Wolves will run. The T-Wolves will score. They won’t play defense. Ricky Rubio will be wheeling and dealing and Khan will be blowing kisses from the crowd, and the T-Wolves will be a playoff one and done at best. Not just this year, but throughout Nelson’s tenure, however long that may last.
