Shane Battier has tweeted that his future in Memphis is in the air, and proclaims he only knows as much as anybody else — “Lots of rumor and innuendo about free agency and my future home. To be honest, I have no clue how it will shake out. If you do, please share”
Quick Analysis: I went in search of these “lots”, TONS!, of rumors, and really only found one: Battier to Miami, or Chicago. Apparently the Heat are very interested in signing Battier, and even worse news for the Grizzlies, Battier has reportedly expressed his interest in joining a contender. I’m going to assume the rumor that Battier is referring to is this particular rumor, and that he might be back peddling now that he’s been pegged as wanting to play elsewhere. Battier’s an upstanding guy–one of my favorite players. So it doesn’t surprise me to see him pretend to know nothing about the situation. He probably wants nothing to do with being labeled one of those guys who all but picks his own destination just by going public with it.
As for the Heat, while it looks good for them to bring in a guy like Battier, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense given their current makeup. Wade and James are logging those minutes. I don’t really see where Battier fits in. The first thing Miami needs to do before anything else, is get a point guard in there who doesn’t think he’s one of the big three–did anyone see Chalmers jacking up threes in game 6 like he was Kobe?
And Chicago? Perfect fit. Battier coming in behind Deng would make the Bulls second unit one of the most lethal in the league. And for a team that’s already on the verge, an improvement like that seems like a no-brainer.
