“Eyes Wide Open” Kevin Pelton of ESPN sees everything, and apparently he sees Chris Paul being traded to Oklahoma City for Russell Westbrook in the NBA’s future.
Quick Analysis: The bonus to this is you have to pay to read the full “article”. These shmucks over at the World Wide Leader. Not only can they create their own headlines, but they can make you pay to read them.
As for the absurdity of such a trade: it will never happen. Sure, OKC would love the deal. Westbrook is probably the weak link on that team, the guy who single handedly brought them to their knees in the playoffs. Paul is hands down the best point guard in the game. He can score, pass, defend, and most importantly, is heady enough to know when to defer. If OKC picked up Paul, they’d be a lock for the finals, and probably the NBA title next “season”. But no, the trade will not happen.
It would be disastrous for New Orleans. Pelton suggests it is time for them to rebuild. Correct. But in what way do you plan to rebuild by bringing in a guy like Westbrook? Money? Sure that’s all good and well for year one, when you’ll only have to pay him 4 mill, but Westrbook is no longer a prospect, and come the end of his contract, he’s going to want those superstar dollars. Westbrook will only open up room under the cap short term. And the guy’s a basket case. He’s a hothead. He turns the ball over and throws tantrums when he gets benched. Not really the kind of guy I want to build my team around. If you trade Paul, you take the Utah route and trade him for high picks and first or second year prospects. It’s the best you can do.
And now I’ve wasted twenty minutes analyzing something that isn’t real. Next post I’ll be analyzing the pros and cons of Orlando adding Shrek as a backup center. ESPN, you’ve done it again.
